Because of its elevation the station is known for its quite remote character for central Germany with a few main roads and some small towns within 5 km.

The area around the station is heavily wooded and impacted by significant biosphere emissions in the warmer months. However, the observatory is also impacted by pollution from the heavily populated Rhein-Main area (pop. ≈ 2 million) including a dense motorway system and large cities such as Frankfurt (pop. ≈ 700000, 30 km SE), Wiesbaden (pop. ≈ 300000, 20 km SW) and Mainz (pop. ≈ 200000, 25 km SSW). The area 50 - 100 km north of Kleiner Feldberg is lightly populated and devoid of major industry.

Meteorology (DWD)

The German Weather Service (DWD) have kindly offer to provide us with datasets from their meteorological garden at the summit. All participants have password protected access to the database, which is available for non-commercial use only. This service is already available (01.07.2011).

Meteorology, O3, NOx (HLUG)

Meteorological and trace gas data (NO, NO2, O3) have been recorded at the site by the Hessische Landesamt für Umwelt und Geologie (HLUG) for more than a decade.

http://www.hlug.de/?id=7122&station=675

Summer average daytime temperatures are ~ 20 degrees, with nighttime temperature 5-10 degrees lower. In exceptional years, e.g. 2003, maximum daytime temperatures greater than 30°C have been recorded, which were also associated with exceptional O3 mixing ratios of > 100 ppbv.

The plots below give a more detailed look at the summer months for 2010.
